Promoting moderation with health expert Dr. Ellie Cannon

IARD partnered with writer and broadcaster Dr Ellie Cannon to create a series of tips that promote moderation and responsibility among adults who choose to drink

Dr Ellie Cannon is a General Practitioner, as well as a respected author and broadcaster, who provides actionable advice to adults to help them make informed health choices. Her tips for drinking moderately are aimed at adults who choose to drink, designed to be easily understood, and are adaptable for global markets.
She said: “As a GP, I see many patients coming to my surgery looking for accessible and workable ways to moderate their drinking and my tips are designed to help answer those questions. I am delighted that organisations like IARD are helping to shine a light on conversations around moderation and responsible drinking because it is an emotive issue and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Anyone with questions about their drinking should always talk to a healthcare professional.”
Dr Ellie’s tips to drink moderately and responsibly are to:

  • Set your limits: Take time to enjoy your drinks and stick to your limits
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water
  • Consider 0.0%: Explore no-alcohol options and alternate between these and alcohol drinks
  • Perfect your drink: Check labels for alcohol by volume content and use standardised measuring tools
  • Have a meal or snack: Eating helps slow down the rate at which alcohol is absorbed
This partnership is the latest example of IARD’s ongoing work to promote moderation and responsibility among adults that choose to drink. IARD members, the leading beer, wine, and spirits companies, support informed choice by providing moderation messages on product labels and online.
